SUPER/NATURAL, my current series of large scale charcoal drawings, is an investigation of the natural forms that populate my coastal South Carolina home. I began this series to call attention to the explosive growth that is straining our low country ecosystems. The population of Beaufort County has doubled the past decade, and conservation efforts are unable to keep pace.
When a 250 year-old majestic live oak becomes a parking lot inconvenience, we have a problem with priorities. Protections in place will matter little when there is no available land for the next generation of seeds to find purchase and thrive. My hope is that my drawings serve as a call to action, and not as a eulogy to our disappearing southern forests.
